STV for BC - Vote Yes!

Good Sign

I'm thinking that it's not a very good sign for STV opponents when a Google search for "Opposing BC-STV" brings up my site as the first hit. Although it may be logical since anyone searching for that term is probably just trying to dig around to see if there actually is anyone opposing BC-STV besides a few nervous party insiders/columnists (and in case you're wondering, so far the answer is no).

See this post over at Double Blind for a seconding opinion.

  • I hope you're right to be optimistic. If not, I'll blame you for my bad investment decisions on the UBC Election Stock Market...where Yes shares can currently be had for the bargain price of 31.5 cents apiece! Not sure if that's a bad sign, but apparently the other investors don't share your optimism. Apparently I do, though...although I am usually optimistic about the Canucks' playoff chances too, so I'm not sure my prediction counts for much.

  • Just because there's no organized opposition doesn't mean the referendum will pass (although we can still hope). I thought there's be an NHL season this year, so I'm not doing too good prediction-wise either.

In the end, the apathy vote will probably decide things.

  • We can still hope? I guess I was wrong to infer you were that optimistic.

I'm obviously not really up on everything going on back home, seeing as I'm stuck here in Ottawa for the moment, but it didn't really occur to me that it might not pass until I saw the numbers on the Election Stock Market.

Then again, when I was talking to my mom a couple weeks ago, she said this whole business of ranking candidates sounded like "too much work". Given that she has a degree in math and computer science, I guess that comment should have worried me more than it did at the time.

O.k., I'm starting to get upset now. If this doesn't pass, that is a huge setback for electoral reform in BC and probably the rest of Canada too. The possibility of it not passing just seems unthinkable. But maybe it's not. :_(

  • Really, I think it's just hard to say at this point. My general opinion is that people are more favourable than opposed, but 60% is a pretty high threshhold.

The yes site has the results of a poll up which suggest that in the early stages, support is right around 60% although there is a significant undecided vote at this point.
